Opportunity to join HTW PPI Standing Group

An exciting opportunity has arisen to get involved with our world leading patient and public involvement (PPI) work as a paid volunteer.
We are looking for volunteers to join our PPI Standing Group (PPISG), which is responsible for ensuring effective, appropriate and meaningful PPI takes place at the heart of our appraisal programme.

Health Technology Wales (HTW) is a national, independent organisation working to improve the quality of health and social care in Wales. We collaborate with partners across the health, social care and technology sectors. We review evidence and provide national guidance on health technologies that are not medicines; this includes, for example, medical devices, surgical procedures and psychological therapies.

HTW has  a well-established process and tools for undertaking patient and public involvement into appraisals of health and social care technologies. We  currently have several openings for new PPISG members.


As a member of the PPISG, you will be asked to:

  • Attend quarterly meetings
  • Determine appropriate methods of PPI for each topic on the appraisal programme
  • Retain oversight of HTW’s ongoing PPI
  • Review plain language summaries
  • Take part in PPI events and outreach events when appropriate
  • Provide advice, guidance and responses to enquiries from HTW’s team
  • Connect HTW to any contacts/persons/organisations of relevance where possible
  • Help to raise HTW’s profile


Members of PPISG also sit as Public Partners on two other HTW internal bodies; Assessment Group (AG) and Appraisal Panel (AP). The role of the Public Partner on each body is to:

  • Represent the views of patients, carers and the public at AG/AP meetings
  • Present relevant PPI information to other group members
  • Ensure decision making takes account of the perspectives of patients and their families
  • Full voting group member


We will offer you:

  • a designated person for support
  • training
  • payment (Via volunteer Contracts – paid volunteer. This can be paid to employers of full time employees from patient organisations, charities or other sectors )
  • opportunities to become involved in national and international PPI activities


PPISG, AG and AP are currently operating virtually, although opportunities to attend in-person events will be offered when they arise.


We are looking for people who:

  • have an interest/experience in:
    • Conducting PPI in health technology assessment or other areas, such as research, or as a patient yourself
    • Have a background in/understanding of one of the following disciplines:
      • Social care, as conducted in Wales and the UK, technologies in social care, connections to UK support groups in social care
      • Medical ethics and/or philosophy, medical and social technologies and connections to UK networks
      • One of the key Welsh Government ministerial priority areas (e.g. cancer, diabetes, mental health)
      • Qualitative research, supporting patients to contribute to research/HTA
      • Patient experiences in the UK, connections to patient organisations in the UK and other organisations supporting patients, contributing grassroots patient experiences to policy/HTA/research
      • Digital medical devices, artificial or augmented intelligence in medical devices, and patient and public understanding of digital and AI devices and connections to UK networks
    • experience of:
      • being part of a Committee or working in multidisciplinary teams
      • handling confidential information
    • the ability to:
      • understand complex information quickly and effectively
      • reach objective and impartial conclusions
      • communicate effectively, with experience of public speaking
