Chyme reinfusion therapy

Summary

Type 2 intestinal failure is when intestinal function is reduced below the minimum necessary for absorbing macronutrients, water and electrolytes, and requires intravenous supplementation to maintain health and/or growth for a period of weeks or months. Chyme reinfusion therapy involves pumping chyme (the product of the digestive system collected in a stoma or fistula bag) from the upstream bowel into the downstream bowel. This then allows for absorption of fluid, salts, and nutrients in the downstream part of the bowel, reducing the risk of dehydration and malnutrition.

Health Technology Wales researchers searched for evidence on the clinical and cost effectiveness of chyme reinfusion therapy for type 2 intestinal failure after bowel surgery.

Based on the evidence identified, HTW’s Assessment Group concluded to progress this topic to Evidence Appraisal.
