Guidance published on artificial intelligence-assisted ultrasound to detect deep vein thrombosis

Health Technology Wales has published new guidance on the use of artificial intelligence-assisted ultrasound for the detection and diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

DVT is a blood clot in a vein, usually in the leg. If part of the blood clot breaks off and travels to the lungs it can be extremely dangerous.
Currently it is diagnosed by a specialist such as a sonographer or a radiologist using an ultrasound scan.

The ThinkSono Guidance system can be used by non-specialists to diagnose DVT using an AI smartphone application and a handheld ultrasound device.

It has been proposed that the technology can enable a faster diagnosis of DVT.

According to HTW’s guidance however, more evidence is needed on the use of ThinkSono Guidance technology for the detection and diagnosis of DVT.
