Guidance published in Floseal to treat acute nosebleeds

Health Technology Wales has published new national guidance on the use of Floseal gelatine-thrombin haemostatic matrix to treat acute nosebleeds.

According to HTW’s guidance, the evidence supports the routine adoption of Floseal for the treatment of a nosebleeds – known in medical terms as epistaxis.

Nosebleeds can require emergency treatment in hospital which can involve nasal packing.  This usually requires admission to hospital for observation and removal of the packing by a clinician which can lead to re-bleeding.

Floseal is a brand of nasal packing material that is dissolvable, so it does not require observation or removal. This means a patient would not need to be admitted to hospital.

HTW’s guidance states that Floseal is associated with reduced pain, better patient satisfaction during treatment and can reduce the rate of overall re-bleeding.
