Guidance published on implantable tibial neuromodulation devices to treat urge urinary incontinence

A graphic representing a Topic Exploration Report, Evidence Appraisal and GuidanceHealth Technology Wales has published new guidance on the use of implantable tibial neuromodulation devices (ITNDs) to treat urge urinary incontinence and/or overactive bladder syndrome.

Urge urinary incontinence is a sudden, urgent need to pass urine. It is mainly caused by contractions in the muscles of the bladder and can be caused by weak pelvic floor muscles, nerve damage, infection, low levels of oestrogen or a heavier body weight.

ITNDS use electrical signals to help control the muscle contractions that cause urge urinary incontinence.

The device is implanted in the ankle and the treatment can be administered by the patient at home.

According to HTW’s guidance ITNDs show promise for the treatment of urge urinary incontinence and/or overactive bladder syndrome but the evidence on the devices is insufficient to support routine adoption.
