Health Technology Wales introduces new set of guidance recommendations

We are excited to announce a new set of recommendations for our guidance on health technologies.

The new guidance recommendations are as follows:

  • Should routinely offer
  • Should not routinely offer
  • More evidence is needed.

We have standardised the wording of our recommendations and updated our guidance documents to make HTW guidance clearer and more consistent. You will start seeing these changes in guidance issued from February 2026 onwards.

Full information about the new guidance recommendations is provided in the Overview of Recommendations document which can be read here.

HTW’s recommendations on health technologies apply to all local health boards, NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee, Velindre University NHS Trust and Welsh Ambulance Service University NHS Trust, when they have responsibility to provide/arrange care for the population mentioned in the guidance.

The status of HTW’s recommendations is ‘adopt or justify’. This means that organisations are expected to follow the recommendation or provide justification for why they have chosen not to follow it. Recommendations on how to implement and fund the technology are not within HTW’s remit.
