HTW Chair receives prestigious Fellowship in recognition of contributions to medicine and learning
HTW Chair, Professor Peter Groves, has received a prestigious accolade in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine and learning in Wales.
Professor Groves, a Consultant Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales, has been awarded a Fellowship by the Learned Society of Wales.
The Society awards Fellowships to people representing excellence in the sciences, humanities, arts, social sciences, and other fields, who have made an outstanding contribution to learning and who have a demonstrable connection to Wales.
Fellowships are awarded following an election process and only those that have made an outstanding contribution to life in Wales are selected.
In addition to being HTW Chair, Professor Groves is also Chair of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Appeal Panel, and previous Chair of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Devices Expert Advisory Committee and the NICE Medical Technologies Advisory Committee.
He has shown a strong commitment to teaching and research throughout his career and has a particular interest in the regulation and health technology assessment of innovative medical devices.
Following the news that he had been awarded the Fellowship, Professor Groves said:
“It is a truly great honour to have been awarded a Fellowship by the Learned Society of Wales – a prestigious organisation which promotes research and inspires learning across Wales.
“I am passionate about sharing my own knowledge and supporting the learning of others – particularly in the fields of cardiovascular medicine and health technologies.
“I look forward to using my voice to help promote the work of the Society and the importance of scientific research in Wales.”
Professor Groves was among 43 new Fellows elected this year by the Learned Society of Wales including two colleagues from the Velindre University NHS Trust (VUNHST) – Professor Mark Taubert, Clinical Director for Palliative Medicine and Dr Seema Arif, Consultant Clinical Oncologist. Professor Andrew Westwell, an Independent Member of the VUNHST Board was also awarded a Fellowship.
