Distance visual acuity assessment is one of the most frequently performed examinations of visual function, involving the use of eye charts to assess the clarity or sharpness of a patient’s vision. Digital tools and technologies may enable consultations to be undertaken remotely, thereby reducing demand on constrained ophthalmology services.

Health Technology Wales researchers searched for evidence on the clinical and cost effectiveness of digital tools for remote assessment of visual acuity.

The HTW Assessment Group decided not to progress this topic further due to the lack of evidence of effectiveness at present’
