Haemodialysis at home

Topic Status Complete

Portable home dialysis systems

Summary

Haemodialysis is a type of kidney replacement therapy for people with kidney failure.  Conventional haemodialysis is delivered in hospital or satellite dialysis units, but home haemodialysis is an option for some patients. Home haemodialysis avoids the need to attend treatment centres and may make it easier for patients to fit haemodialysis into their normal lives and engage in work and leisure activities. Portable systems exist that give patients more freedom to travel, do not require as much space or water drainage facilities, and do not need extensive home modifications.

Health Technology Wales researchers searched for evidence on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of any haemodialysis at home system (portable or non-portable).  Based on the evidence identified, HTW’s Assessment Group concluded not to progress this topic to evidence appraisal
