Point-of-care portable, digital endoscopes for people with lower gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in primary care

Summary

People presenting in primary care with lower gastro-intestinal symptoms may require endoscopic assessment.  Standard care involves conventional rigid endoscopes or flexible endoscopy in secondary care. Point-of-care portable, hand-held, digital endoscopes, such as LumenEye XI  (SurgEase Innovations, London, UK), can be used by GPs or nurses in primary care and may reduce the need for referral to secondary care.

Health Technology Wales researchers searched for evidence on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of point-of-care, portable, digital endoscopes in people presenting in primary care with lower GI symptoms.

Based on the evidence identified, HTW’s Assessment Group concluded not to progress this topic to evidence appraisal.
