Raman spectroscopy blood test combined with machine learning to identify colorectal cancer

Specialities:  Cancer

Summary

Raman spectroscopy measures proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids in serum to produce a ‘biochemical fingerprint’ and, using an AI algorithm, people are classified into high or low likelihood of colorectal cancer.

This technology has the potential to help clinicians identify and prioritise patients with lower gastrointestinal symptoms for further investigation.

Health Technology Wales researchers searched for evidence on blood tests utilising Raman spectroscopy with machine learning, including CanSense, for the detection and triage of colorectal cancer.

Based on the evidence identified, HTW’s Assessment Group concluded not to progress this topic to evidence appraisal.
