Team bids fond farewell to Chair who played vital role in HTW’s development

Photograph of HTW Chair Peter Groves We would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks and gratitude to Professor Peter Groves, whose tenure as Chair of Health Technology Wales has sadly come to an end.

Professor Groves was appointed as HTW Chair in 2018 and in 2021 his term as Chair was extended by the then Minister for Health and Social Services, Eluned Morgan MS.

Under his tenure the organisation has become an internationally respected health technology assessment (HTA) body working in partnership with stakeholders across the UK and globally.

Since being established in 2017 HTW has published more than 40 pieces of national guidance on non-medicine health and care technologies. It is playing a key role in identifying technologies that could address Welsh Government health priorities and is at the forefront of developing appraisal methods for artificial intelligence (AI) health technologies.

Professor Groves’ extensive experience as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and in medical technology use has enabled him to be  a driving force behind the development of the organisation and his insightful approach to the assessment of health technologies will be greatly missed.

Speaking about his experience as HTW Chair, Peter Groves said:

“It has been a great privilege to be part of HTW’s journey from fledgling HTA body to an organisation whose work continues to have major impact on the lives of people in Wales.

“The identification of innovative health technologies is key to solving some of the greatest challenges facing healthcare providers in Wales. Meanwhile HTW’s robust evidence-based approach to the appraisal of these technologies is more important than ever as the sector continues to rapidly evolve.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at HTW and our partners across the health and care sectors for their dedication, hard work and support for the organisation since it was established. I wish them every success in the future”

Susan Myles, Director of HTW, added:

“Peter has played a central role in the development of HTW as an organisation, providing invaluable input to the appraisal process, due to his extensive clinical experience and expertise in medical technologies.

“He will be greatly missed as HTW Chair and we wish him all the best in all his future endeavours.”

In addition to being HTW Chair, Professor Groves is also Chair of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Appeal Panel, and previous Chair of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Devices Expert Advisory Committee and the NICE Medical Technologies Advisory Committee.

In May 2024 we were proud to announce that Peter had been awarded a fellowship by the Learned Society of Wales in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine and learning in Wales.
