Professor Tom Crosby OBE

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Professor Tom Crosby OBE.

Professor Crosby was a highly respected and much valued member of the Health Technology Wales Appraisal panel, whose expertise and unwavering commitment made a lasting impact on all who worked alongside him.

He worked as a Consultant Oncologist in Velindre Cancer Centre and was awarded an OBE in recognition of his exceptional contributions to cancer care in Wales. These included his leadership in upper gastrointestinal cancer, his work through the Wales Cancer Network and as the National Cancer Clinical Director, the development of national cancer delivery and improvement plans, the Single Cancer Pathway, and the transformation of oncology services in South East Wales.

Professor Crosby first joined the HTW Appraisal Panel in 2018 and was instrumental in shaping its work, providing thoughtful and insightful contributions on health technology appraisals.

He was a passionate advocate for the use of innovative technologies to diagnose and treat cancer and touched the lives of patients and families affected by cancer across Wales.

In a joint tribute to Professor Crosby, Dr Susan Myles, HTW Director and Professor Keith Lloyd, HTW Appraisal Panel Chair, said:

“Tom was a great advocate for the work of HTW and a longstanding and highly respected member of our HTW Appraisal Panel.

“He recognised the central importance of evidence to inform decisions on whether to adopt new technologies. His practical insights into the potential value technologies may offer for patients, the public and professionals were invaluable. He was a fantastic colleague who was known for his kindness and generosity and will be greatly missed.

“We would like to extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”
